This year’s annual Moriah Foundation Members’ Cocktail Party was special in so many ways.
A night to express our solidarity for our brothers and sisters in Israel, to thank our Foundation Members for their extraordinary support of our children, to welcome an unprecedented 99 new families to the Foundation, and to hear from the leader of the Liberal Party, the Hon. Peter Dutton MP show his staunch support for Israel and make an important and meaningful announcement to help fund security works at Moriah.
Jewish education is the answer to Jewish continuity
Foundation President, Judy Lowy OAM, thanked our Foundation Members for their generous support of the Capital Appeal.
“Thank you for your generosity, for your trust in us and mainly for your belief in just how important a strong Moriah College is for the future of this community.” Foundation President, Judy Lowy OAM
We were privileged to be joined by The Hon. Peter Dutton MP, a staunch friend of the community who has consistently condemned the atrocities of October 7, taken clear action to combat the shocking rise in antisemitism in Australia and shown his upstanding, principled and moral stance in supporting Israel’s right and duty to defend herself and to live in peace.
Technology at Moriah College will enhance minds but never replace them
Moriah College Principal, Mira Hasofer, reflected on the choice between the growing dependence on AI and the rejection of new technologies. “At Moriah College, we believe in a third path – one of balance. We will not raise passive slaves to technology; we will nurture a generation of thinkers and leaders… preparing them to lead with confidence, thoughtfulness, and courage in a world that demands nothing less.”
We must ensure that excellence at Moriah is a mindset
Robbie Blau addressed Foundation Members for his first time as College President. “Moriah College is a cornerstone of the Sydney Jewish community. We do not simply educate; we nurture a Jewish identity that is proud, strong and deep rooted, fostering in our students a profound connection to their people and the State of Israel. Moriah’s responsibility is clear – we must strengthen and secure the future of Jewish education.”
Our Capital Appeal Update
We have shared the vision for this project before and the need to upgrade and modernise our learning environments as well as to improve our security, but as we move forward, it is worth restating the significant impact this project will have. Nearly 40 years after Moriah’s High School was first built, we are rebuilding more than half of it including creating state-of-the-art facilities for science, design & technology, and visual arts; larger, more flexible classrooms; a new library and study centre; a multipurpose hall; and contemporary spaces for students and staff.
This redevelopment will also allow us to double our green space, increase security and enhance traffic flow – building a better future for our school and community.
The tender process is underway, and the Building Committee is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of the proposals we have received from construction contractors.
We are, of course, very grateful for the enormous support we’ve had from the community! There is still a funding shortfall, and we are now in “the final stretch” of making this dream a reality.
We are well progressed with our bankers about a potential debt facility but every dollar we borrow from the bank needs to be paid back with interest, and the College is committed to limiting our borrowings as much as possible.
Thank you for your dedication and your unwavering belief in our school and our children. Together, we will continue to build, to grow, and to ensure that Moriah College remains a place of strength, of belonging, of academic excellence and Jewish pride for years to come.
