We were so pleased to come together on campus with our treasured grandparents and special friends, for our annual Grandparents Club Morning Tea.
We enjoyed a wonderful musical performance by our adorable Primary School choir followed by an inspirational Pesach message from College Rabbi, Rabbi Gad Krebs.
Rabbi Krebs explained that we need our freedom, but we also need purpose and direction, and that is the role of Moriah College. To provide our children with an understanding of what it means to be Jewish, and the importance of being a moral beacon to the world.
Foundation President Judy Lowy OAM warmly welcomed our grandparents to the event.
“As grandparents, and great grandparents, you are an intrinsic part of our Moriah family, and we want you to be as involved as possible in our Moriah life.” Judy Lowy, Foundation President
Judy shared that during this challenging time, we stand staunchly with our brothers and sisters in Israel, with the safe return of our hostages and the safety of our heroic IDF and all Israeli citizens top of mind and heart, and that we are more committed than ever to strengthen our community and empower our children.
“The shocking events in Israel and around the world remind us of how important it is to provide our children with a Jewish education, and how fortunate we are at Moriah.”
Our children are learning about our 5,000-year history, religion, and beautiful traditions, steeped in our modern orthodox Zionist values. We are encouraging our children to be proud Jews, educating them to advocate for Israel and nurturing them to lead rich Jewish lives, as upstanding citizens, who look after one another and make the world a better place.
Judy shared some details about our upcoming capital appeal which is taking place in September.
“For the Foundation, our job is to continue to invest in our Jewish children, many of whom rely on us for fee assistance and bursaries, and at the same time, to now embark on our most ambitious project yet – the redevelopment of our High School.”
We are building two new contemporary multi storey High School buildings which will include a science centre, design & technology centre, visual arts centre, a library and study centre, multipurpose hall, canteen, break out areas, staff faculty spaces, and generously proportioned classrooms. The demolition of 6 ageing and inefficient buildings will enable us to double our green space, expand our sports courts, improve our traffic flow, increase onsite parking, and enhance our security.
“We understand this is an ambitious project, but it is time to invest further in Moriah. We are aspirational people, we are builders, we believe in progress and giving our children the best opportunities that we can.”
If we raise the required funds, construction will begin next year, and the buildings will be ready in early 2027.
We really do hope that you will all support this significant project in whatever ways you can, which will be so important for all our children and for the next chapter in Moriah’s history.
In introducing our new College Principal, Mira Hasofer, Judy shared how fortunate we are to have Mira at the helm, who is not only an educator and leader of the highest calibre, but also a proud Moriah graduate.
In her short time at Moriah, Mira has demonstrated her exceptional leadership skills, deep understanding of teaching and learning methodology, genuine commitment to excellence in Jewish and general education, and strong alignment with Moriah’s ethos.
“It has been my privilege to lead this school since January this year, and to spend my days with your grandchildren, and it is an honour to address you as a group, for the first time, today… As grandparents, your influence on your children and grandchildren is immeasurable, providing them with the guidance and wisdom that is indispensable in today’s complex world.” College Principal, Mira Hasofer
Mira paid tribute to the extensive life experiences and abundant wisdom of our grandparents who form the bedrock of our community, and shared her own journey that not only reflects her personal connection with Moriah but also celebrates the enduring bond between generations.
“Like many of you, my parents, grandparents themselves, with their deep-rooted values, saw in Moriah not just a school but a beacon of Jewish learning and importantly Jewish continuity. I am and will always be grateful to them for putting our Jewish education first.”
In reflecting on her vision for Moriah, Mira spoke about the importance of putting outstanding education at the forefront, and on focusing our entire community’s attention on respect, kindness and hard work.
“Over time, I have come to understand that our role as educators transcends imparting knowledge. It is about instilling the wisdom to discern, to inquire, and to engage with the world thoughtfully. It is about instilling a love for learning, a love for life and a love for doing for others with care and with kindness.”
